Summer Safety Tips for Seniors at Home: Staying Safe and Independent

Summer brings sunshine, family visits, and more time outdoors—but it can also bring hidden risks for older adults. Heat, dehydration, and increased activity levels can lead to dangerous situations, especially for those living alone. At Senior Home Solutions, we believe that a safe summer starts with preparation and the right support.

Here are five essential summer safety tips for seniors:

1. Stay Hydrated

Older adults are more prone to dehydration, and many don’t feel thirsty until it’s too late.

Tip: Make sure that water bottle you got mom for Mother’s Day is filled up and near by throughout the day and, if necessary, set reminders to drink regularly. Consider foods with high water content like fruits and vegetables.

2. Beat the Heat

Extreme temperatures can cause heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Tip: Stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day (usually 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Use fans, draw the blinds, and avoid unnecessary physical activity. Seniors typically enjoy it warmer due to decreased blood flow but we still have to keep a reasonable temperature indoors.

3. Dress Smart

Light, breathable fabrics can help regulate body temperature.

Tip: Wear light-colored clothing and a wide-brimmed hat if going outside. Don’t forget sunglasses and sunscreen. Dressing in layers may also help keep the sun off their skin and give them a something to remove if they get warm.

4. Watch for Medication Interactions

Some medications can increase sun sensitivity or reduce the body’s ability to regulate heat.

Tip: Talk to a pharmacist or doctor about side effects and stay cool if you’re on heat-sensitive medications.

5. Be Ready for an Emergency

If a fall, heatstroke, or other medical issue occurs, fast access to help is critical.

Tip: A personal emergency response system like the MG Mini or MG Mini Lite ensures help is just a button press away—inside or outside the home, on a walk or at a baseball game. Personal emergency response systems are an insurance plan that we all hope we never need but we’re glad we have it when we need it.
